Das Zauberbuch (The Magic Book)

A goat-boy once found a book; it was the Clerical Shield, and he stuck it into a trouser pocket. In the evening, as he would go to bed, the book came into his mind, and he began to read in it. When he had read for a while, and in doing so had spoken out all the words plainly—as is the wont with folk not trained in reading—there suddenly stood a fair, great straw-bottle full of wine before him on the table.

He gaped at it for some moments without understanding, and then fear came over him, and he let book and wine be where they were, and made himself swift into the bed under the feather-cover.

Soon after, he told his odd happening to a Capuchin, and he said to him: "If only you had drunk the wine; it was good; it came out of our cellar."
